Walk Against Sexual & Gender-based Violence

In July, over 4,000 people including Nyaka’s CEO, Country Director, Staff, community religious leaders, grandmother group local leaders, and community members attended the 3rd annual walk against Sexual Gender Based Violence which took place in Kihihi, Kanungu District. The British High Commissioner to Uganda, Her Excellency Kate Airey, was the Chief walker and commended Nyaka’s management and staff for the work done to restore hope among survivors. The event started with the official opening of a new Nyaka Healing Centre by H.E. Kate Airey.

Nyaka Vocational Secondary School Staff Houses

The first block of teachers’ housing was completed and occupied by five teachers in September. The block has five units, each consisting of a living room, bedroom and storage area. Pit latrines were constructed outside.

51 Grandmothers get new homes!

Construction on 51 homes (20 Kanungu, 21 Rukungiri, and 10 Rubanda) funded by Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church was completed. The homes include a house, kitchen and pit latrine and were transferred over to grandmothers in August.

Primary and Secondary students sit for their final exams

Following the Covid Pandemic, many students were affected and some dropped out of school in many parts of Uganda. 120 Nyaka students who were enrolled in candidate classes at primary and secondary level were able to sit for their final exams to enable them go to the next level. 50 students sat for their Primary leaving exams, 32 students sat for the Senior Four final exams and 17 senior six students sat for their final exams that will enable them to move on to University or other institutions of higher learning.

Dental Clinics added to our health services

Nyaka started a monthly dental clinic at the Mummy Drayton Clinic in March and since its inception the visiting dentist has seen 859 clients. Out of that number 321 clients were screened and received treatment including extractions, fissure sealants, amalgam, surgical disimpaction and glass ionomer cement.

Nyaka X New York City Marathon

In November, 50,000 runners from around the world participated in the NYC Marathon including 23 runners who ran on behalf of Nyaka, raising an astonishing $136,000 for our vulnerable children and grandmothers. On the same day in Uganda, Nyaka organized a run for more than 100 locals in solidarity with Team Nyaka in New York. Thank you to all the participants and their generous donors! This was the fifth year of Nyaka’s participation in the world’s best marathon.

Nyaka’s Founder was selected for Harvard fellowship

In Fall, Harvard University announced Twesigye Jackson Kaguri will join their 2023 Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellowship (ALI) Cohort.

Annually, Harvard University selects a prestigious group of distinguished community leaders to participate in the nine-month long fellowship program in Boston, Massachusetts. The ALI Fellowship is for executive-level leaders with diverse experiences and backgrounds and at least 20 years of leadership experience. Kaguri was selected due to his visionary leadership within the Ugandan community and his transformative work through his nonprofit organization, Nyaka.

Conducting impact evaluations across our four programs

We were able to conduct impact evaluations across our four programs. 254 grandmother groups, 80k+ children under their care; SGBV impact survey, Education Impact survey and Health impact survey (health analytics included) – with outcomes due for publication in late February 2023. This marks our largest impact survey reach and will be our first impact survey publication in 22 years.

Nyaka’s Mass Vaccination Campaign with EGPAF/USAID-RSW

In April, Nyaka joined efforts with the Government, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) and USAID-RSW to accelerate vaccination rates against Covid-19 among elderly persons and their household members. As a result of this campaign, 14,437 Nyaka-led persons were vaccinated, inclusive of the elderly, people living with HIV and persons aged 18+ years.

Nyaka Primary school is officially a National Examination Center

Nyaka Primary school was approved as a national examination center and so for the first time, the Nyaka students took the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) from their school. The school also hosted students from Nyakagyezi Primary School to sit for PLE at the Nyaka Campus.

Nyaka was invited to participate in the 2023 NYC Half Marathon. This incredible run starts in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and finishes in Central Park in Manhattan. It’s a beautiful tour of the city, usually with fantastic weather that welcomes in the Spring but still cool enough for long distance running. The 13.1 mile run will take place on March 19th, 2023 and this year we have five slots on our team and many enthusiastic participants.

Please contact mstauble@nyakaglobal.org if you are interested in running and fundraising for Team Nyaka in this year’s NYC Half Marathon.

Nyaka at UNGEI’s Transforming Education Summit

“As a young boy growing up in Nyakagyezi, a small village in southwestern Uganda, I saw how girls were mistreated and not sent to school. The few who were given the opportunity dropped out when their menstrual periods began and were then forced to marry at a young age. Women did not have the right to earn money or buy land. Nyaka has invested in girls’ education and women’s welfare from the day we started, and I want this concept to be replicated all over Uganda and the world.”

– Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Founder and CEO, Nyaka.

Nyaka’s Founder Twesigye Jackson Kaguri represented the organization in the UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI)’s Transforming Education summit in New York from September 19-22. The summit was a coalition of selected representatives of non-governmental organizations around the world who are doing work to promote and advocate for girls’ education.

Annually, over 54% of students educated at Nyaka are female. On top of receiving free education and school supplies, they are given materials needed for menstrual hygiene and have access to counseling. This support gives them the opportunity to stay in school and concentrate on their studies, increasing their chances of success.

In an increasingly dynamic world, education must be prioritized and elevated to the forefront of the global agenda. Nyaka is proud to contribute to this big conversation, that will transform education to transform the world.

We are thrilled to tell Nyaka’s supporters that when the renowned New York City Marathon takes place on Sunday, November 6th this year, Team Nyaka will be among the 50,000 runners at the starting gate. That’s because 23 intrepid individuals are, right now, raising funds and spreading awareness for Nyaka as they train for their challenging 26.2 mile run through the city’s five boroughs, finishing in Central Park.

The New York City Marathon is not only the world’s largest marathon but one of the most awe-inspiring charity events on the planet.Tens of thousands of people come from all over America – and the world – to watch and participate, representing a multitude of missions and causes. That’s because, in order to earn a chance to run in this most competitive of races, each runner must support a charity.

Nyaka has been one of the NYC Marathon’s 500 charities since 2018. We began that year with five runners who raised $40,000 for Nyaka’s children and grandmothers, then in 2019 we fielded 10 runners who raised $99,111. Because of COVID-19, the marathon was cancelled in 2020, but returned in full force last year when our team of 20 – which included Jackson, as you can see in the picture above — raised $116,211. This year we are proud to have 23 runners and expect the most successful year yet.

Clearly, the NYC Marathon has become an important part of Nyaka’s yearly budget, but it’s more than that. Each of our runners will not only raise thousands of dollars that go straight to our programs in Uganda, but they also will be sharing Nyaka’s story with their personal networks. And the more people who learn about the visionary work that Nyaka does in Uganda, the more resources Nyaka will have to thrive and grow. We are deeply grateful for their extraordinary efforts.

In Uganda, Nyaka organizes a marathon event for the local people to participate in solidarity with our team running in NYC. Here in the US, are our fearless runners who will wear Nyaka’s purple and gold colors in the race. They come from ten states across the country: Massachusetts, Colorado, New Jersey, California, Iowa, Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Florida, and New York:

  • Steve Bartomioli
  • Will Bernicke
  • Hunter Carpenter
  • Marta Djaletta
  • Griffin DiParlo
  • Nevin DiParlo
  • Michael Ferrandino
  • Christine Garcia
  • Olivia Hagerty
  • Emil Henry
  • Meg Husted
  • Mady LaFreniere
  • Zach Larson
  • David Leshnower
  • Valerie Levitt
  • Ryan Parcells
  • Jack Rooney
  • Matt Taylor
  • Chris Tierney
  • Lelia Venema
  • Zack Venema
  • Jack Wheatley
  • Lauren Zokan

Please consider supporting one or more of these runners as they try for their own personal bests – finishing a daunting race while raising a hefty sum for Nyaka’s future. In the link below, you will see all of the runners’ pictures and profiles and if you wish, can leave a supporting gift. The runners – and Nyaka’s children and grandmothers – will all be thankful.

MEET PIUS NIWAMANYA: NOW A FIRST-CLASS UNIVERSITY GRADUATE!

Divider

January 15th, 2019 was one of the happiest days of my life because it is when I received a call that I would finally be able to go to university. I had completed my A-level education a year earlier and had not enrolled in any tertiary institution as I lacked tuition fees. Now, I had been awarded a full study scholarship from Beautiful World Canada, offered through Nyaka.

On January 20th, 2019, almost a month after the first semester had begun, I attended my first lecture at Uganda Christian University in Mukono. I will never forget the joy and gratitude that I felt, knowing that I was finally a university student. The scholarship from Beautiful World Canada not only catered for my tuition fees, but also scholastic materials, accommodation, necessities, and even
a stipend!

With all my needs taken care of, I was motivated to work tirelessly to achieve my academic aspirations. I concentrated on my academics and achieved first-class grades in both semesters of my first year.

However, in my second year of university, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, resulting in a nationwide lockdown. All learning institutions were closed, and I went back home to Nyakagyezi village awaiting a time when my studies could resume. Fortunately, my university with authorization from the National Council for Higher Education opted to administer the teaching and learning processes online. I, therefore, had to continue my academic work online using a phone and other electronic devices.

This required stable electricity and internet connections which I did not have at home. The crowded environment at home also did not provide a conducive atmosphere to study.

The Nyaka Blue Lupin Community Library, supported by the Stephen Lewis Foundation, became a Godsend during this time. The library provided a comfortable learning atmosphere with a wide range of reading materials that facilitated ample study and research. The library’s stable electricity ensured that I could always attend my online classes as I was able to charge my phone. The computer lab was available for me to research, complete, and submit schoolwork that could not be done on my phone. This community space allowed me to engage and study with students from other universities who had also taken advantage of the services the library was offering. Through the library, I gained mentors and friends that are still dear to me today.

With all these resources and benefits provided by the Nyaka Library, I was able to not only keep up with my studies but read ahead which allowed me to excel in my academics.

Beautiful World Canada continued to pay for my tuition and internet costs to support my online education during this time, ensuring that my studies remained on track despite the pandemic’s disruption. I was also provided for as I fulfilled the research and internship academic requirements for my course which allowed me to fully engage in the experience. Beautiful World continued to support me when the lockdown restrictions were lifted and I was able to return to university.

On July 29th, 2022, I graduated from Uganda Christian University with a first-class degree in Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration. Indeed, this is a great milestone and I believe it will lead me to my life goals, which include becoming a professor and giving back to my community. The opportunity that was given to me is a blessing that has changed my life! I am where I am today because of Beautiful World Canada and the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the work that they do with Nyaka. I am eternally grateful. Thank you!

Stidia is a 55-year-old widow and grandmother of five children

Divider

Stidia is a 55-year-old widow and grandmother of five orphaned and vulnerable children living in Mulehe Village, Rushebeya Parish of Kambuga Subcounty Kanungu District. Stidia owns a garden filled with fruit trees, weather resistant seasonal and perennial crop varieties, and domestic animals (goats, chicken and pigs).

“After receiving training in microfinance and enterprise management, basic vocational skilling, agribusiness and livestock management from Nyaka in 2017, I tasked myself to embark on full-time agribusiness that would later change my storyline and income narrative. Nyaka did not stop at equipping me through training, but also gave me a startup microloan of $28.5, which I invested in the purchase of improved agro-inputs, tools and labor. Unlike before, I started using compost and liquid manure to boost my crop yields, running water control ridges to prevent soil erosion, and adopted the use of natural pesticides to mitigate crop pests and diseases. Agribusiness has become my income and food security lifeline from the time I joined Nyaka’s grandmother program,” she proudly said.

Nyaka’s MEAL team conducts Annual Household Income Surveys (HHIS) to measure impact and progression of household income, earnings, assets and poverty index (PPI). We also measure rates of compliance and adoption to standard practices in microfinance and enterprise management, WASH, agriculture and livestock care following several trainings, input distributions and group microfinance loan disbursements. Stidia’s trajectory and progression above the World Bank extreme poverty threshold of $1.90 per day is a statement to the impact and the socio-economic transformation Nyaka is imparting on rural communities in South Western Uganda.

Our 2021 impact survey outcomes on household income and out of poverty progression index, estimated Stidia’s daily income and earnings at $4.36, with livestock assets worth $198.5. Every season, her household generates over $380 (7x what she used to earn before Nyaka came into the picture) from her agribusiness and livestock enterprises. Oftentimes she also provides agricultural expertise and casual labor to other farmers at a fee of $2 a day. She is able to pay school fees, facilitate household expenses, contribute to her group savings pool and take care of all her loan obligations with grandmother and microfinance group of Rushebeya.

“I have pride in seeing my orphaned grandchildren being able to continue with their education, while accessing most of the basic needs a parent would wish for their children…” she said. Stidia is looking to set up a small boutique for second hand clothes in the near future, to further expound and diversify her income sources.

British High Commission’s ambassador for a day competition.

The ambassador for a day competition gives girls aged between 14-18 years old an opportunity to spend the day shadowing the British High Commissioner to Uganda. The competition aims to build confidence in young women, helping them develop into first class leaders and is open to all girls from across Uganda. For this competition, girls were asked to write a 1000 word essay answering the question, “‘If you were Ambassador, how would you use your influence to increase climate change action in Uganda and the world’?” Out of the many essays received, Comfort’s essay was so compelling, she was one of three finalists selected.

On November, 9, 2021, the top three finalists were hosted by the British High Commissioner to Uganda, Kate Airey, shadowing her and learning from her. During Gender Day at the UN Climate Change Conference, all three young women experienced what it’s like to be a UK ambassador for a day, with a focus on climate change. Comfort, along with the other winners, spoke to High Commissioner Kate Airey about their hopes and dreams and how they are tackling climate action.

“I am so happy to have been selected as a winner of the Ambassador for a Day competition. I am looking forward to coming to Kampala and shadowing the British High Commissioner for a day. I am excited to learn more about what it takes to be a leader, especially as a woman. When I heard that my essay on increasing climate change action had been selected as one of the 3 winning entries from  across the whole of Uganda, I gained some strength. I felt that if I can succeed at this I can succeed in other things. It has given me confidence in myself. I am grateful to all the teachers and staff at Nyaka Primary School, Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School and Maryhill High School for their encouragement and support.”

Kashemere Comfort, age 18, Nyaka student
